Getting Started with Super Software Carousel File: README.TXT Welcome to Super Software Carousel. Follow these simple instructions, and shortly you will be able to use any of the over 40 Super Software Carousel programs with a few keystrokes. If your Palmtop or flash card came pre- installed with Super Software Carousel, you are ready to go. CTRL+2 brings up the applications menu, CTRL+3 the game menu. Help Files The first icon of both the games and applications menus brings up help. We recommend you read or print this help file from your desktop. In the root of your CD, you will find HELPSSC.HTM, which you can view using your desktop web browser (Netscape or Explorer). Also on the CD is HELPSSC.TXT, which contains the identical contents, and can be read from any editor or word processor (i.e. Notepad or Word). To read about the additional software included on the CD, see EXTRAS.TXT. An electronic version of the Software Carousel manual can be found in \SW_ALL\SC\SC.TXT. In-depth documentation for the different Super Software Carousel programs can be found in \SW_ALL subdirectories. Documentation files usually have a TXT or DOC extension or they say README. Installing Super Software Carousel onto your Palmtop or flash card 1. Copy the following directories from your CD to your Palmtop. - To store Super Software Carousel on your upgraded Palmtop's C drive, copy all the \CDRIVE subdirectories from your CD to your Palmtop. - To store Super Software Carousel on your Palmtop's flashcard copy all the subdirectories of \ADRIVE from your CD to your Palmtop. - Both \CDRIVE and \ADRIVE contain the following subdirectories. Each CD subdirectory must be copied directly to the root of your C or A drive. \SC7 (Contains the Software Carousel program.) \SC-TEMP (Contains Super Software Carousel installation files, deleted during installation. During normal Super Software Carousel usage, SC-TEMP is used to store temporary files and for unzipping.) \SC-APPS (Contains application programs.) \SC-GAMES (Contains games.) \SC-HDM (Contains menu program, configuration and text files.) Optionally, at any time, you can also copy to your Palmtop: \BUDDY if you want to install BUDDY. \WWW if you want to install a evaluation version of (May 1998) WWW/LX Plus. 2. On your palmtop in FILER go to the SC-TEMP directory (on A or C depending on where you installed it.) In \SC-TEMP, highlight INSTALL.BAT. Press Enter. Just follow the instructions at the prompt. Have your Software Carousel 8-digit serial number from your CD or disk ready. 3. During the installation, you will be able to edit your AUTOEXEC.BAT file directly in the Super Software Carousel editor, PalEdit. PalEdit looks and works very similarly to MEMO. You will be asked to replace the line that says "100" or "200". If Super Software Carou- sel files are placed on the C drive, then replace "100" or "200" with: C:\SC-HDM\AUTOSSC.BAT. If Super Software Carousel files are placed on the A drive, then replace "100" or "200 with: A:\SC-HDM\AUTOSSC.BAT. Be sure you type this line correctly. When you are ready to exit, press F10 to save. Then MENU Quit to quit. Buddy users: for now, you must place REM in front of the line that starts BUDDY. If you don’t have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file, the installation program will create one and this step will be skipped. 4. The palmtop will reboot as part of the installation procedure. If all went well, CTRL+2 brings up the applications menu and CTRL+3 the game menu. That’s it unless you already use Software Carousel, Buddy, HDM, or have installed third party TSR’s or EXM’s. If you already use Buddy, Software Carousel, HDM, or third party TSRs or EXMs. We have tried our best to minimize your reconfiguring. However, you will probably need to make some adjustments. 1. If you already have Software Carousel in- stalled: a. Backup of \SC\CAROUSEL.OPT. This file con- tains all your current Software Carousel configu- ration information including work session and re- source information. You probably also have an \SC\HP.BAT file which you should also back up. By default, HP.BAT contains session 1 startup information. To confirm what programs your Software Carousel setup calls, run SCCONFIG and go into Work Sessions. b. We have installed Software Carousel into \SC7 so as not to overwrite your Software Carousel setup which is probably in \SC. You should back up your \SC directory before deleting it from your palmtop. It may contain other files you created over time. You might leave it for a while in case you want to revert back to it for testing. Version 7 is safer then earlier versions: it contains several critical bug fixes involving swapping of PC Cards. c. See the "What’s New if you are upgrading" section at the end of the Software Carousel manual.) d. We suggest you follow the installation directions above. Then you can use SCCONFIG (an option on our CTRL+2 applications screen) to add back your old sessions and hot keys. You may need to increase Maximum Number of Work Areas from Personal Preference Items & Misc menu which is set at 6. Alternatively, you can copy over your backed up CAROUSEL.OPT file to the new \SC7 directory. You can add the two Super Software Carousel sessions. The startup commands are APPS and GAMES. You will probably need to increase Resources in SCCONFIG. e. Note that \SC7\HP.BAT starts session 1. \SC-APPS\APPS.BAT launches session 2. \SC-APPS\GAMES.BAT launches session 3. You may want to modify HP.BAT to match your old setup. 2. If you already have BUDDY installed: Buddy requires memory overhead and is not needed in Super Software Carousel sessions 2 and 3. Software Carousel will not launch with Buddy ahead of it. In your active AUTOEXEC.BAT file, put a REM in front of the line that starts Buddy. Then edit \SC7\HP.BAT. In the line before the last which says "100", type in the line that starts BUDDY, exactly the same way you had it in AUTOEXEC.BAT. (Ignore the other mention of BUDDY inside HP.BAT). 3. If you have installed EXM programs (ones that you assigned hot-keys) into Application manager: We have added 3 and optionally 4 EXM programs to your setup. We did this using a program called MOREEXM.COM in part so as not to interfere with your current setup. MOREEXM removes the limit on the number of EXM programs you can install. It also enables the ZOOM program to run. If you currently use MOREEXM, you will have to combine your C:\_DAT\MOREEXM.INI with ours, adjusting for conflicts. When you look at MOREEXM.INI you will find keycodes, and a com- ment at the end which gives the name of the program and the key to which it is assigned. Our C drive version of file C:\_DAT\MOREEXM.INI looks like this: c:\sc-apps\vclock.exm,B300,VClock AltAppt c:\sc-apps\clipvue.exm,BB00,ClipvueAltMem c:\sc-apps\zoom.exm,A700,1,Zoom AltMore rem c:\buddy\buddy.exm,7100,Buddy AltF10 This configuration starts ZOOM with Alt-MORE, VCLOCK with Alt-APPT, CLIPVUE with Alt-MEMO, and optionally BUDDY with Alt-F10. There should be no problems unless you have already assigned these keys to other programs. To check con- flict, check C:\_DAT\APNAME.LST and A:\APNAME.LST files. (If you already have Buddy installed, then you already have a hot-key assigned for Buddy. Therefore, leave the Buddy MOREEXM.INI line as is or delete it). To determine other keycodes, you can install an EXM file in MORE, Applications Manager, by using F2, Add. When done in FILER view C:\_DAT\APNAME.LST or A:\APNAME.LST, one of which will contain the new assignment including key- code. If you have Buddy installed, type Fn+K and then type a key combination, such as ALT+HPCalc. The keycode shows up as the F1 label in the application you are running. Alternatively, use the KEY- CODES.GDB database on the CD in \SW_ALL\EXTRAS to look up a keycode. 4. TSRs and your AUTOEXEC.BAT file: The Super Software Carousel installation has you eliminate the last line "100" or "200" that normally starts System Manager. Instead we start another batch file called \SC-HDM\AUTOSSC.BAT. This program adds \SC-APPS to the DOS PATH. It also calls MOREEXM and ANDREW3. ANDREW3 provides what most people think are more readable fonts. You can put a REM in front of the line, if you don't like them. At the end, AUTOSSC.BAT calls Software Carousel. Software Carousel in turn calls SC7\HP.BAT, which starts System Manager (and optionally Buddy). If you start a TSR or other programs in AUTOEXEC.BAT that only work in System Manager (like Buddy or Magnify), then you should move the lines from AUTOEXEC.BAT to \SC7\HP.BAT. Otherwise, these programs will be taking up memory not needed when you run CTRL+2, APPS, or CTRL+3, GAMES. See TSR in the Reference section of the Software Carousel manual for more information. 5. If you already use HDM: Two more features were added to the Super Software Carousel version of HDM. First, you can now browse your file list and select a file with which to launch a program. For example, when you launch PKUNZIP, you can browse and find, say, BESTPRG.ZIP to unzip. This upgrade means that a whole class of programs that require a file name to run, can now be launched from HDM. Secondly, HDM now allows an up to 80- character tip. These new features mean that old HDM (DAT) configuration files will not work with the new version. To fix this, run the conversion utility found on the CD in \SW_ALL\HDM. (See HDM docs for more explanation.) Troubleshooting The Super Software Carousel installation has been tested on a variety of machines. The times we had difficulty during installation were when the A or C drive were somehow corrupt. In those cases when the system rebooted and Software Carousel started to initialize, the palmtop would "hang" with a blinking cursor in the left corner. (Software Carousel’s OPTIMIZE could not run). You will have to reboot, and press ALT to boot the palmtop from the D drive. (Double speed drivers, then type C:\SPD31 to normalize the screen). To fix the corruption, enter D:\DOS\CHKDSK /F A: (substitute C: if C drive). Fix any errors by saying y at prompt. If these steps still don’t help, back up your drive (a good idea anyway) and reformat. Then try again and things should work. Also, there is a potential problem if you have a driver installed in C:\CONFIG.SYS that refers to the A drive such as the EXP flash/fax/modem card or a stacked card. You must remove that driver if you are using a second flash card. Otherwise, the system will hang. Technical Support The best technical support for both Software Carousel and Super Software Carousel applications comes from fellow users, online. By posting a question in a public forum, you will get excellent information from a large pool of experienced fellow users. In general this kind of support is superior and broader than what a single tech support person can offer. In the case of Thaddeus Computing, we operate on a very small staff with individuals having multiple duties. In order to make such an ambitious offering such as Super Software Carousel to such a relatively small customer base, we ask that you take advantage of online support.
